American Megatrends Introduces a New KVM Class at Comdex with a Zero-U, Standalone Digital KVM Over IP Solution

by Rev. James G.W. Fisher - Positive Image News (PIN)

Attendees at COMDEX have the pleasure this year of seeing the newest products from AMI that are sure to capture your attention.  Las Vegas 2003 attendees can visit AMI’s booth, 6046 in the Las Vegas Convention Center where they will see the new space-saving MegaRAC™ K1 which has been introduced by AMI.

The MegaRAC™ K1 provides a monumental new tool for instant, non-intrusive, remote management by simply attaching it to the back of a PC, server, or analog KVM.

What's So Special About The MegaRAC™ K1?

You ask what's so special about the MegaRAC™ K1? Well that is easy to answer.  AMI has the only zero-U, standalone digital KVM over IP solution that does not take up rack or desktop space or require additional hardware to function.

With several patent-pending innovations, AMI’s compact and easy-to-use MegaRAC K1 is an instant, space-saving and non-intrusive fully enclosed KVM in an extender-sized package that does not require any additional hardware to function.

A special MegaRAC K1 advantage is its ability to attach to an existing analog KVM, allowing the user to:

  • Convert an analog KVM to KVM over IP: the user can upgrade existing analog KVM switch installations, easily and conveniently

  • Manage a server from anywhere on the web: the MegaRAC K1 attaches easily to any server, allowing the user to manage the server from remote locations via the web

  • Control multiple servers using one MegaRAC K1 by attaching to a multi-port analog switch

  • Display multiple views; multiple remote sites can simultaneously monitor the MegaRAC K1

“A KVM over IP product was a logical extension to our management product line, including our award-winning MegaRAC family of remote server management controllers,” said S. Shankar, AMI’s President. “The KVM market, KVM over IP in particular, is growing and this is a perfect time for us to showcase our talents in improving upon existing technology and being the first to launch a next-generation of KVM switches.”

AMI saw a need for a non-intrusive KVM product with redirection and true remote management, added Shankar. While other KVMs have addressed some of this, they have historically been expensive with limited capabilities. The MegaRAC K1 capitalizes on AMI's technology and management and provides customers with a unique solution to their requirements.

“The market for the MegaRAC K1 includes OEMs, the channel and IT managers,” said Michael Patellis, AMI’s national sales manager. “OEMs can integrate this tiny KVM into their existing analog switches to create a KVM over IP solution and system integrators can provide their customers with a cost-effective value add that will allow them to remotely control and manage their servers and complex networks.”

With the MegaRAC K1 single-port KVM management solution, administrators can manage any server from anywhere in the world and gain control of the server at any time, even at the BIOS level. A space and cost effective addition to an IT environment, the MegaRAC K1 (83 mm x 80 mm x 26 mm) offers many features, including remote video display, fast redirection, animation, remote keyboard/mouse control and remote boot with USB 2.0 mass storage.

Data centers with high server concentrations need a sophisticated KVM over IP solution that includes:

  • Accessibility to servers from any distance, at any time, regardless of the server’s state

  • Scalability for future growth and complexity

  • A non-invasive server management methodology

  • Security

  • Reliability, low cost, low maintenance and easy installation

  • A single console view and management for all servers

MegaRAC K1 addresses the above and beyond. It simplifies deployment by using the industry proven TCP/IP and standard Ethernet cabling (CAT5). Server farms can deploy this technology without going through special cabling efforts and reduce deployment cost significantly.

MegaRAC K1 is available in two versions: VGA or DVI. MSRP is $599, evaluation units will be available by mid-December and production units will be available mid-Q1 ’04.
